A First Assessment of the Workshop
It seems yesterday that we started, and we already put in place four editions of the migration and family workshop. During these years the event has quickly attracted the interest by young and established scholars in the fields of migration and family economics. We can maybe identify four reasons for this success.
-
A manifest objective of the workshop on the study of the interactions between Migration and Family Decisions traditionally underexplored topic in Economics, which gained a lot of interest since we raised attention over its importance.
-
An extraordinary set of speakers, including worldwide economic specialists in the fields.
-
An original format, which privileges thorough interactions in a relaxed and friendly environment to often dense sequences of presentations that characterize standard workshop formats.
-
A cross-disciplinary approach, which combines data, methodology, and research approaches from complementary fields in economics such as history, labor, development and political economy.
The Way Forward
The success of the Workshop has been facilitated by the engagement of the dynamic team of researchers from the IESEG Research Center on Family Labor and Migration Economics (IFLAME). The Workshop will remain the flagship event of the IFLAME Research Group also for the years to come.

The next years will also see a growing engagement of the IFLAME group in the organization of other major international events in IFLAME fields. Already in June 2026 there will be the Conference on COunterfactual Methods for Policy Impact Evaluation (COMPIE) organized in collaboration with the European Commission at IESEG premises.

To leave space to COMPIE, the fifth edition of the Workshop on Migration and Family Economics will take place in June 2027 (with provisionary dates 21-22/06).

This waiting time will give us the opportunity to reflect and develop new ideas. Should you be willing to contribute and share your ideas, give us suggestions and make proposals on how to improve the workshop do not hesitate to contact us throughout the form below.
